Five artists. Five practices. One shared connection to the elements.

earth & ether brings together five artists 
whose practices are deeply connected to the natural world 
and the unseen forces that move through it.

Earth, water, fire, air and ether find expression through painting, sculpture, ceramics, weaving and felting. Each artist responding through their own relationship with material, landscape, movement and instinct.

At the heart of the exhibition is also the idea of art as connection and ceremony. The act of making with our hands, working with the elements, gathering from the land, observing its rhythms and transforming one thing into another are practices that have connected us to place, to one another and to something beyond ourselves for thousands of years.

Together, the works explore the elements not simply as materials or subjects, but as forces we live within — shaping the land, the materials we work with, and ourselves.

MEET THE ARTISTS

KITSUNE MOON

Sculpture · Furniture · Ritual Objects

My work is rooted in the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi — finding beauty in imperfection, impermanence and the marks left by time.

I work with reclaimed timber, stone, brass and found materials, drawn to pieces that already carry a history. Rather than forcing these materials into something perfect, I allow their cracks, weathering, grain and irregularities to become part of the work.

 

There is an elemental quality to this process — working with what has already been shaped by earth, weather, fire and time, then responding to it by hand. Each piece evolves through that relationship between material and maker, becoming something sculptural, functional and entirely its own.

For me, making is as much about listening as it is creating — allowing the material to guide what it wants to become.

My work has always been deeply connected to the natural world and the elemental forces that move through it.

I paint intuitively, allowing colour, water, texture and mark-making to build and shift across the canvas. Sometimes I guide the work and other times I simply follow — much like nature itself, there is an ebb and flow between intention and surrender.

 

The changing seasons, landscape, feminine form and cycles of growth, decay and renewal continually find their way into my paintings. Earth, water, fire and air appear not only as landscape, but as movement, emotion and transformation.

There is also something less tangible that I am always connecting to, the space between what we can see and what we can feel. For me, painting is a way of listening to that quieter language and allowing it to take form.

In this collection, I explore the language of the earth, how its forms, textures and symbols speak to us across time and culture. 

 

I am inspired by the process of firing in a traditional Anagama kiln, where flame, ash and heat move through the kiln, leaving their traces across the clay. I am drawn to this elemental collaboration and the balance between intention and surrender, allowing the process of making and firing to become part of the work itself. Each piece is an offering to the quiet intelligence of the natural world, a reminder that we, too, are shaped by the same elemental forces.

FELT INDIE

MARGIT Mederich · FELTING

I've always been drawn to the ancient art of felting — it is deeply satisfying for me working with nothing but wool, natural soap and water, feeling the fibres slowly bind together into something entirely new. It's slow, physical work, which is exactly what I love about it.

Watching a shorn fleece take on a new life in my hands, guided by instinct as much as intention, is a process I never tire of.

 

My rugs are the heart of what I do — each one felted from the whole fleece of a rare-breed sheep, kept as close as possible to its natural shape. I see them as a more ethical, considered alternative to traditional sheepskin. Every piece I make is one of a kind, shaped entirely by hand and carrying the texture, colour and character of the sheep it came from.

My practice and creative expression is inspired  by a life immersed in country and our intrinsic elemental woven connection. By walking observing and gathering from the land the stories of the fauna, mirror our own experiences of life and tell a story creating a relatable expression of form through the elemental lens of nature. 

 

Weaving is a somatic ancient healing art, a ancestral birthright throughout most lineages and lays within our hands memory. This body of work tethering earth to ether through natures rhythms of creation and destruction allows the emotional scapes within to take form to birth life after the floods and flames. Here beauty raw and resilient may be woven into an expression of what it is to be human in these times.

NEWS FROM THE STUDIO

My Byron Bay studio is where I create original paintings and fine art prints inspired by nature, the feminine, changing seasons and the stories woven through landscape and place. More than a place to paint, it is a welcoming creative space where exhibitions, workshops and meaningful conversations unfold, and where people can experience the artwork as it comes to life.
